Dragon Con 2010 - Event Planning

It is mid-June and time to plan for the upcoming Dragon Con. It seems like the planning grows with each year.

On the slate for this year....
Thursday Night Dinner
Poor Man's Pub Crawl (with room themes!)
Black Bunny Pirates - D*C Parade
PRDS Photo Scavenger Hunt (with prizes!)

The Thursday Night Dinner
This is usually held at a nicer restaurant within walking distance of the host hotels. I have a couple of suggestions but be sure to throw in your own ideas. I would like to have a head count by August 1st. I will need a definite head-count by August 15th.
Here are my suggestions:

Max Lager American Grill Brewery
Meehan’s – Downtown
Trader Vic’s
Azio Downtown
Metro Cafe' Diner

I know there are many more in the area but I am not in downtown Atlanta enough to add to the list. Please make/add suggestions in the comments.

Poor Man's Pub Crawl
We will be holding the Poor man's Pub Crawl on Friday night. As currently planned, it will begin at 6'ish in my room. From there, we will journey to all other participating rooms gazing with wonderment at their chosen themes It is an event with much revelry, staggering and inebriation. Thus far, we have approximately 7 rooms and 13-15 participants. Remember to have a non-alcoholic option (water, juice, soda - most mixers will work for this) for those who can't/don't drink.

If you have a room in a host hotel and are interested in participating, let me know asap.

Black Bunny Pirates - D*C Parade
Long live the Bunny! The Black Bunny Pirate Crew will be marching in the D*C 2010 parade again this year. I am hoping to have decent group (jesse, josh, kyle, cricket, amanda, will, thi, emily, glen - don't you love the way I volunteer people). I will have the flag (and I do need a flag bearer) and lots o'beads to throw and give away. This is always a fun event. If you want to march with the Bunny - and I strongly encourage you too - let me know.

PRDS Photo Scavenger Hunt
New this year! I have been kicking this idea around for a few years and finally decided to give it a try. We are currently working on the scavenger hunt list. If you have any ideas to contribute, please send them to me.

You will be able to pick-up a copy of the list on Thursday, two hours after Badge Pick-up begins. There are lots of different photos on the list - some scary, some not - some difficult and some not. Plus, there are all kinds of ways to get bonus points! Basically, it really isn't about finding the most scenarios. It is more about finding the unique ones and getting creative with the photos. (Note, I said creative, not pornographic). So, if you think you won't be able to participate because you are not staying at the convention or have a full schedule while you are there, I would challenge you to at least get signed-up and get a list. You never know when you will snap that 100 point photo.

There will be prizes for different categories. Categories and Prizes have yet to be determined. If you have any suggestions, let me know.

Let the frenzy and insanity the is Dragon Con begin!! Well, at least a the planning part....

D*C 2009

Dragon-Con is upon us and I am still trying like crazy to finalize things! I just wanted to post a few main bits of information before the insanity commences.

1) If you purchased a D*C membership through me and have any issues picking up your badge, call me on my cell phone. Send me an email if you need the number.

2) Thursday Night Dinner - Benihana's @ 7:30pm. Currently attending are: Me, Darrell, Jesse, Bob, Kris, Jane, Jay, Shane, Steve, Liz, Kindra, Hal, Anita, Mike (?). I think that is everyone. If you plan on attending and your name is not on the above list, let me know asap so I can change the reservation number.

3) Pirate Tea will be at 6:30pm on Friday night. If you are walking with the Bunny in the parade on Saturday morning you need to be there. If you cannot be there, let me know so I can get you your information and parade ribbon. This will also be the beginning of the Poor Man's Pub Crawl. If you would like to participate (and have a room at con) and have not signed up, please do so as soon as possible.

I think those are the biggies.

OK, my plan is too blog at con. I honestly do not know if that will happen or not.

We'll see :)

New Slide Show

I have added a new slide show for 'Pirates at Play'. I tried to combine all the old pictures and new pictures into one but failed miserably. It's late and I'm too tired to fix it now. So I just put both up for your viewing pleasure!

Beads, Beads and a few more Beads!!

Things are sort of crazy around here. I got back from D*C a little over a week ago. I head to Disney in a little over a week. When I get back from Disney, I have 12 days before I head to the Pirate Festival at Tybee Island!!

Luckily, it has been minimal prep for Disney - it was all about D*C this year. However, this will the first time The Black Bunny has been to the Tybee Island Pirate Festival. While it will be a laid back event, we ARE walking the parade.... and you know what that means - BEADS!!!!

I just received my bead shipment from New Orleans (where else!!). This should get us through Tybee and still have some left over for D*C 2009.

There are approximately 2200 plain beads and 720 medallion beads (they will become Bunny Beads) here!!! With the leftovers from this years D*C, I have well over 3,000 strands of beads!

This is a map of the Tybee Island 'Stuff'. It indicates the parade route, primary location of the Pirate Fest activities (the Pier), where the beach house is located and Fort Pulaski. Why Fort Pulaski? I think we could get some great photo's there on Friday morning. Check it out:

Tybee Island Pirate Festival Parade

The Black Bunny crew is officially walking in the Pirate Fest parade. All we have left to do is sign the Waiver forms and fax them back to the TybeeFest office - but we have a little time for that to get done.

So crew, check your calendars and see if you can make it October 9 - 12; especially a certain Quartermaster whose birthday falls on October 11th! I'll have the waivers with me at Dragon-Con.

The Captain!

CREW ANNOUNCEMENT: Tybee Island Pirate Festival 2008

Finally, the Black Bunny Crew will be able to make it! This is the first year that our Halloween Disney trip didn't fall at the same time as the Pirate Festival!

With that being said, the really good news is, thanks to our Bo'sun, we have a (practically) free beach house on Butler Street (1 block from the beach and 3 blocks from the pier) for Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. We would be responsible for the cleaning fee - $100.00. The house has 5 beds. I know 2 are kings and there are a couple of doubles and then there is the floor space.

So, now I need to know who is in and who is out. I want to make sure there is a good turnout for the Black Bunny so let me know as soon as possible if you can / want to make it!

The plan is to walk in the Pirate Parade and generally drink, wench and carouse the whole weekend. I'll let you know more about that as I find out.

Your Captain!
(Who is lovin' her Bo'sun right now!)

Trader Vic’s – Thursday before Dragon-Con

Friends and Crew, I have made a reservation for Trader Vic’s located at the Hilton for 12 people @ 7pm on the Thursday night before Dragon Con begins, August 28th.

Trader Vic's transports diners to the Pacific Islands with its exotic interior, Polynesian cuisine, and tropical cocktails. The Mai Tai Bar, decorated with colorful glass buoys suspended from bamboo rafters, offers fruity concoctions and tantalizing tidbits. Delectable meals are served in the dining room adorned with batik prints complimenting the Pacific Island theme.

It is still early in the game and I don’t know exactly who is interested in doing what but I will be calling for a final count on Monday, August 25th. Depending on the number who will be there and the consensus of opinion we will either have dinner in the Dining Room, just order some lighter fare in The Mai Tai Bar or just drink ½ price Mai-Tai’s and listen to the music by Tongohiti.

Check out all the links. It will give you an idea of what Trader Vic’s has to offer!

CREW ANNOUNCEMENT: Tybee Island Pirate Festival 2008

Some of the Black Bunny crew will be heading down to Tybee Island to participate in their Pirate Festival on October 10 & 11. We will be staying until Sunday, October 12th. After researching places to stay, I have discovered the best bet it to get a beach house rental near the festival area that sleeps enough for the crew that will be there. It comes out to a reasonable $$ per night.

If you want to go down to Tybee, pirate a little, drink a little, enjoy fresh seafood and some beautiful sunrises, let me know ASAP so I can get a good count of crew members and can reserve an appropriate sized house. I need to make the reservation by July / August.

Capt'n Annabella

Oct. 10-11, 2008 – AHOY MATES!
Swashbucklers of all ages will be converging on Tybee Island to participate in the 4th Annual Tybee Island Pirate Fest! Don your most colorful pirate’s costume, and gather your Krewe of marauding buccaneers, because Tybee will be overrun and invaded by pirates. That’s right the 4th Annual Pirate Fest weekend is coming October 10th - 11th and that means lots of pirates, merriment, parade and much more.

GANGWAY!
The Pirate Fest Invasion will be on Friday, October 10th, festivities begin at 6pm in the shadow of the Tybee Pier & Pavilion. The pirates and their buccaneers will invade Tybee with cannons blazing, in search of Tybee’s Mayor Jason Buelterman and the “key to the city.” Once the key has been surrendered the pirates will party Friday and Saturday with live entertainment. The Thieves Market will be filled with treasures from different Ports of Call along with grog & grub to feed the Scurvy Dogs!

YO-HO-HO!
Don’t miss the Pirate Parade on Saturday October 11th at 3pm. Following a successful invasion of the City of Tybee, the pirates and their buccaneer’s will gather for a victory parade down Butler Avenue in which the pirates share their wealth of trinkets and doubloons with the crowd along the parade route. Rumor has it that the parade will stop in front of city hall where the pirates will shoot their cannons at city hall, capture the mayor, and force him to ride out their victory parade on their float. There will be a pirate trophy for the best pirate float!

CREW - Roll Call

Who is out there??

Your captain wants to hear from you!

CREW ANNOUNCEMENTS: Dragon Con 2008

I am hoping to see most of the crew and my other fellow pirates at Dragon Con this year.

As Captain, I have just a few announcements.

(1) I am planning a gathering for dinner on Thursday night at Trader Vic's located in the Hilton. I am looking at a 7'ish pm dinner time. After dinner, we can walk over to the Hyatt to get our badges. The will be handing out the Pre-Reg badges until 11pm. I think (I hope) this will eliminate any real line wait.

(2) I will be hosting Black Bunny Tea on Friday night around 6pm. This will be a chance for everyone to get together and coordinate weekend events without cutting into the serious Friday night party time.

(3) I need crew to walk in the parade Saturday morning. For some, this is not an option, especially if they are tired of being a powder monkey. The parade starts at 10am and the line up is at 9am. The more crew, the better. Bob, are you carrying my flag? Again, I will have Bunny Beads to throw. I am hoping to have: Darrell, Kindra, Jesse, Ila, Josh, Kristen, Bob, Emily, Thi, D-Tag, Deneen and any one else interested in walking with the BB Crew.

(4) If anyone needs 'pirate' garb for the parade or for wandering around the con, let me know ASAP and will make sure I have something for you.

(5) We will be watching the Costume Contest in my room on Saturday night, so bring on the drinks. Depending on how I feel about the world and how well I am walking, I might make an appearance at the official Pirate Party at the Hyatt later that evening.

I think that is all for the moment. I will check back in with everyone closer to the Con.

The History

About five years ago, a few friends were sitting around discussing what type of pirate ship we would command if given the opportunity. Of course, everyone described the big, bad, nasty ship armed to the hilt with every possible weapon imaginable with names that would make victims tremble in their boots. This vein of discussion went on for quit awhile. After witnessing this growing competition for the alpha pirate ship, I announced my decision.

They could outfit their ships to the nines with every weapon known to man, put on a scary name and sail for the fight. Not me. I wanted to enjoy what life I had left. With that I christened the Black Bunny. On the BB, it's more about the drinking of rum, the camaraderie of crew and the party as we watch everyone else battle it out and slowly sink. We like to have a good time.

The idea of laid-back pirates struck a chord and the idea of the Black Bunny has been growing ever since.

She may not be the biggest or the badest ship on the seven seas but I guarantee the Black Bunny in the most fun.
